
Recently, Mattel launched a Barbie Basics Doll wearing a simple black dress easily accessorized and personalized by their owners using a special accessory kit featuring scarves, purses, shoes, and jewelry. Even more recently, 12 members of the Council of Fashion Designers of America has teamed up with Mattel to launch special edition Barbie Basics Dolls to featuring witty remarks from a CFDA member in regards to the little black dress.
Senior Vice President of Marketing for Barbie Stephanie Cota said, “Each designer expressed his or her individual style by transforming their original Barbie Basics doll into a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. The use of unique materials, special fabrics and, in one case, real diamonds, demonstrate how to infuse one’s own style and personality by accessorizing.”
Executive Director of CFDA Steven Kolb added, “Because accessories are such a big element to the little black dress, this was a nice opportunity to put our accessories designers front and center.”
The Barbies will be showcased in designs from Isaac Mizrahi, Rachel Roy, Justin Giunta, Lorraine Schwartz, Alexis Bittar, Monica Botkier, Deborah Lloyd of Kate Spade, Albertus Swanepoel, and Devi Kroel. These special edition Barbies will be auctioned off on eBay starting this Thursday, January 28th through Sunday, February 7th with a starting bid of $100. All the proceeds of these dolls will be going towards the CFDA’s educational initiatives and programs.
