Becoming an actor or a model is dream held by many, and the larger the industries of Hollywood grow, the more people want to pursue their dreams. Like any other career you not only have to have the experience, you have to have the skills to perform to the fullest. Much like having a job interview, actors and models have to attend auditions and casting calls. Also much like trying to find the perfect place to work, you will turn down work that is not for you and be turned down for work that the casting director does not feel suites you. But, rather than get discouraged, you should show up as prepared as possible and keep at it.

First things first, you will need to realize that no landing jobs and building a career has just about nothing to do with your looks, there are acting and modeling job for everyone out there. All you really need is talent that shines through with a positive personality; nobody wants to work with a self-centered, over exposed, down talking, ignorant person that is full of themselves. In other words if you do not land the role you were auditioning for, don’t shout at the casting director telling him or her what a huge mistake they are making, because you are so beautiful and talented. The truth is, they will at that point feel relieved they did not hire you for the role and your name will be passed around and rubbed in the mud. Working in Hollywood is a very nerve racking, stressful career, you never know what jobs you will land and which ones you will not. It takes a strong person with a strong will and a strong spirit to work in the industry.

Get your portfolio done properly; add professional headshots and photos with a professional resume. When adding photos into your portfolio make sure they display different poses and emotions, and even full color and black and white. Do not over load you portfolio with pictures (there is a such thing as too many), and keep the photos up to date. When building your resume you need to include a full body description with dress size, hip size, bust size, hair color, eye color and more, you also need to weed out old projects and keep it up to date with the newer and better projects you worked on. No casting director wants to read a four-page resume listed with all of your work experience. You may want to take on some no paying jobs or some shots that are TFP (Time For Prints), just to build upon your experience and skills.

When going to auditions and casting calls, you need to be well rehearsed and prepared. If you are going to audition for an acting role, know your lines and know the character. If you are going for a modeling job test shoot, relax, practice moving for pose to pose with ease, and learn which poses make you look the best. Showing up and being pleasant and looking like you know what you are doing is a huge plus and can really mean the difference in landing a role and not landing a role. If you are auditioning for an acting role, put some emotion into it, don’t just stand there like it is a third grade play with your shoulder slumped over speaking in a monotone manner. Go through the reading with friends and family and get a sense of how the character would feel. You have to be entertaining to be an entertainer of any kind, so grab the attention of the casting director and make them feel emotion for the character you are portraying. A model can draw extreme emotions from their audience just with facial expressions. When ever I would see the ads for the Happy perfume a couple years ago, I would start to feel happy no matter what kind of day I was having. You have to show up ready a full of emotion and ready to impress.

Keep in mind that yes, while it is important to approach these things carefully and fully prepared another person could still get the role. There are hundreds of thousands of people that audition for the same role, some with tons of experience and some with no experience, that fact is that there is one slot per character and one person will land the role. No matter how big you are in Hollywood you will always have to audition for your roles, so practice, and go to as many as you can. You will get better with each and every audition you go for. Always remember that although you will heard many no’s in this industry your yes is always just right around the corner, so never give up.

Being in the limelight really puts a person at risk for more dangerous situations. If you are looking to pursue a career in acting, modeling, radio or professional sports, the best thing you can do to protect yourself is to get educated in the aspects of plausible danger.

Although there are laws in place to protect a person against a stalker, it seems as though those laws are still growing to perfection, which means you need to always trust your instincts and further more make a check-list starting with warning signs and working your way up security. You should never put your well-being and safety on the backburner. Trust that inner voice that tells you something is intolerable and listen to those doubts that were never there before. If you have to obtain assistance in labeling your problem with proper terms, from law officials you have allowed it to go to far, by denial.

There are certain warning signs and characteristics that a plausible stalker will display or reflect. Some things to take notice of, are people that are jealous, obsessive, compulsive, manipulative, socially awkward, need to have constant control, deceptive, cannot take no for an answer, fall instantly in love, and cannot take responsibility for their own actions or feelings. If you start to notice that everywhere you go, you continuously “run into” the same person that needs to be a red flag warning. Nobody is in the same place you are every time venture out unless you take him or her with you.

Being in the limelight of the Hollywood industry can make things far more difficult to take notice to strange occurrences; seeing as how there are some fans that may step of the line but are really harmless asking for a photo or autograph while you are eating or in conversation; or taking a photo without your permission. Then there are some that step it up and send gifts, and or drop off letters and such to your residence. Then there are more severe cases in which the stalker will send gifts, and show up at your residence expecting a meeting, some may even go as far as to contact family and friends in an attempt to get your contact information.

As stalking is becoming a larger problem amongst celebrities and their families, stalking needs to be considered a seemingly more intense offense and handled accordingly. To properly handle a stalker there are certain steps you can take to protect yourself from danger and harm. As a person working within the realm of Hollywood you should always be alert of any suspect person(s) in your surroundings, positively identify guests before answering the door, install motion sensor lights and deadbolt locks, use and electric garage door opener, trim shrubbery and hedges, keep fuse box locked, be alert of unusual packages, boxes, or devices and do not disturb these such questionable objects; and all house staff and bodyguards should have a security check prior to employment and should be thoroughly trained on security precautions that are strictly enforced.

For further precautions you should maintain an unlisted/unpublished phone number and request to have complete call blocking to avoid your number getting out. You should avoid calling any 800 or 900 numbers to protect your personal private information. You may also want to attain a private post office box that you use as your normal address for everything, and further more have your PO Box listed for your residence with the three credit bureaus as well. This will go a long way in protecting you personal and private information from anyone trying to get it.

If you are aware that you currently have or had a stalker in the past, it would be wise to carry pepper spray. Check the front and back seats of your vehicle before getting in and lock all doors while vehicle is in use. Keep a detailed journal log of every occurrence you have with your stalker including the dates and times, followed up with police reports.

Sadly some of our beloved talented entertainers did not take the proper steps to ensure their safety and stalkers continue to harm them.

Be on the look out a stalker can be anyone, from a deranged fan that develops a pathological obsessive attachment to you, to a scorned lover, friend or co-worker. Stalking can be a much more scary thing celebrities because their stalkers know more about them and continue to develop growing feeling of connection through tabloids and the work the entertainer does. These stalkers feel that their victim reciprocates the love and adorations they feel and therefore can become more angered when ignored. Anyone wishing to be in the limelight should be well prepared and have taken steps in advance to protect themselves.

Keep in mind when dealing with a stalker, they are mentally ill and have a desire to control their victims. Stalkers often feel that their victim owes them something and they live in a world of fantasy, they are unable to cope with rejection and are deceptive and view themselves as the victims. Never take chances always call the local law enforcement for your own protection.

These days there are so many different types of modeling, if you want to become a successful working model it is recommended you do your homework and settle on the type of work that fits you best. The different areas of modeling are fashion, commercial print, promotional, nude, body parts, web and commercial acting models. Each area of modeling is slightly different in the physical requirements and may mean that one type of modeling work could be perfect for you while another could be completely wrong. It is important that you do your homework on each type of modeling and understand the requirements and obstacles, make sure that you have what it takes to meet the requirements and over come the obstacles that stand to hold you back in your modeling career.

No matter what type of modeling you are interested in the basic requirements are the same. You must have a professional portfolio along with a comp card; these two things are always seen before you are. When you put your portfolio together you want to make sure that you have photos that looks as if they could be printed in a magazine, so in other words get a professional photographer that has experience shooting models and work of this type. These photos are pricey so be sure you are getting what you are paying for. When you assemble your portfolio you want to include a verity of photos without going overboard that capture your beauty and expressions. Avoid taking pictures that display the same expression. You would want a portfolio filled with pictures that are only serious and sexy and lose out on jobs that require different emotional display. Although you are modeling you need to acquire acting abilities to better your chances for landing jobs.

It is important that if you are looking to be a model, that you understand, that you will face much rejection. There are several models submitted to each job and only one person will get it. Even top models like Kimberly Stewart don’t land every job they are submitted to. Each job has different requirements that they are looking to fill, everything from your look, height, attitude, acting abilities, body type and more could affect your chances of landing a modeling job. Almost every model faces much more rejection than acceptance for the jobs they are submitted to.

Hard work is a given whenever you are looking to be successful at anything you do, this is also very true for models. You are the your own boss when it comes to the work you are doing. The agency you are working with is hired by you to help you find work; you are paying them based on the jobs they are finding for you. You must always be willing to look for your own work and know how to go about getting yourself submitted to jobs. Always show up to meeting, shoots, or any job related appointed time at least 15 minutes early. These people are professional business people and their time is valuable, time wasted costs them money and as a result costs you money. For example if you show up late for a shoot, the make up artist, photographer, and other team members are getting paid to wait on you. This can lead to a negative stigma throughout your career costing you possible work, which means less money earned for you. Once you understand the basics you are ready to move onto understanding the in-depth requirements for each different kind of modeling job.

Before you even start the journey towards your new career, you better do your research and find out all there is to know about the career you want.

Most people are familiar with fashion modeling, but few are familiar with the dozens of other types of models and modeling jobs that make up the majority of paid modeling work.

Do your homework

Learn about the different types of models and try to figure out where you fit in. Be objective and realistic. Know your measurements and figure out what kind of modeling suits you best.

If you are of average height, then focus on work that may be geared towards your height. Many girls dream of being high fashion runway models, but most do not have the height needed to be successful. You may be the most beautiful 5’2” goddess around, but at 5’2”, your gorgeous face will not be enough to land a gig on designer runways during fashion week. Always be honest and realistic about your chances. The last thing you want to do is put a lot of time and effort into something that is non-attainable… So focus on what is attainable and to do that you must do your research.

Find your fit

Once you start researching the modeling field, you will begin to see different modeling opportunities. If you have a very athletic physique, you may be perfect for fitness modeling. If you are very curvy and have a more voluptuous shape, you may want to look into plus size modeling. If you have amazing hands, legs or feet, you may look into parts modeling. Remember, no matter what type of modeling it is, you must match the physical requirements such as height, weight, good skin, good hair, good teeth, being fit, etc..

Get another opinion

Once you find the modeling niche you wish to explore, try to get a second opinion. If you know any experts or agents, ask them for their opinion and what type of modeling they believe you may be well suited for.

Your self image may be skewed. Many girls believe they are a plus size when they are not and vice versa.

Make Sure you are photogenic

This may be a bit obvious but there are many girls who look stunning in person, yet can not translate that to film, just like there are many girls who seem plain, yet take stunning pictures.

Get an Agent

Once you’ve identified the type of modeling you are suited for, you should be able to find an agent that specializes or represents your niche.

Confidence, persistence and thick skin are your keys to success

As you pursue your new career, you will most likely find a great deal of rejection and even some criticism. You need to be able to take rejection without breaking into tears. Keep in mind that there are many models going after the same jobs and you will be rejected many more times than accepted. You must have a good deal of confidence in yourself and the drive and determination to keep going. Be persistent, eventually you will begin getting the jobs you want.

Network

As you begin your career, you will meet other models, agents and photographers. Networking is a great way to find out about upcoming jobs and industry events. People will often choose someone they already know to work with rather than someone new, especially, if you are charming and a pleasure to be around. The more people you meet and talk to, the greater your chances are of getting work.

A common question many aspiring actors and models have is whether they need to invest money in professional photography right away. The answer to that question is not cut and dry and you will find many different opinions on what you need to get started. Some people recommend professional photos from the start while others say a nice print of yourself from a digital camera is good enough to get started.

The question you should ask yourself is not whether you need professional headshots or not, but rather, how good of a first impression do you want to make? When you send in your resume and headshot, that is the first impression a casting agent has of you. Based on that, he or she will decide whether to call you in for an audition.

There are people who have gotten work without having professional quality headshots. It is not impossible, but it can be more difficult to land jobs without good headshots. In acting and modeling the competition is fierce. For every one actor or model that gets booked for a job there are hundreds of others who got rejected. In a competitive market you want to give yourself any advantage you can over your competition. Leaving behind an amateur snapshot sends the message that you may not be serious about your career. On the other hand, having high quality headshots shows that you are committed and professional. Many casting directors do not even bother auditioning actors who did not send in quality headshots. Their personal assistants are instructed to toss out anything not meeting their criteria and their resume sees the bottom of the trash can instead of a casting director’s desk.

Models may be able to get away with snapshots when seeking an representation or an agent. Many modeling agents recommend not spending money for photography or a portfolio too early and most agents will accept new models based on her amateur snapshots. However, don’t confuse what you need to find representation and what you need to find work.

Many models try to find work on their own and send in their resumes and portfolios to auditions and casting calls. To anyone looking to hire professional models for shows, events and shoots, a snapshot screams “I’m an amateur and will trip and fall on your runway”. Remember, they are casting “professional” models and will avoid anyone who strikes them as “amateur”.

No matter what career an individual chooses, there is always some type of investment that needs to be made, whether its instructional books, tools of the trade or business suits, every career has it’s own price. Anyone serious about their career invests in the tools to make it happen, correctly.

Models and actors normally need comp cards and headshots to help them get work. Picking a good photographer takes some research and a bit of patience. The easiest way to fall victim to one of those “scams” we keep reading about is by rushing into the deal and not doing your homework.

Before deciding on a photographer check out their portfolio and make sure it is what you are looking for. Don’t just look at one photographer, but check out a few. Ask around and get some recommendations. Many times you can get a better price because you got referred by someone they know. Once you found a photographer you are satisfied with, ask the photographer to supply some references you can call.

A few things to watch out for:

Anyone telling you that you must buy expensive prints in order to get a certain job. There are many scams that tell aspiring models that certain high paying modeling jobs are guaranteed for them if they buy certain photo packages.

Looking through the model magazines online, I found an interesting list. The list is of the top 2 dozen supermodel money makers in the game. I am not talking about the standard runway model who struts her stuff down the catwalks of European shows.

The girls on this list are modeling powerhouses. They are beyond being mere mortals and have managed to get to a place in their careers where design superhouses and international cosmetic companies do backflips to get their attentions, as they should.

How many models can say their appearance on a magazine cover will convert into record sales? The top 10 of these ladies can and command six figure contracts to do just that.

Since no one really knows for sure who is making what, we can assume that the list is an educated guess at best taking into account the projects and clients these ladies are associated with.

One Thing most of these top models have in common is Victoria’s Secret.

#10 Valentima Zaliaeva

The gorgeous Valentima Zaliaeva is a staple of the Ralph Lauren brand which is known to pay a pretty penny for the face that it wants to be represented by.

#9 Carolyn Murphy

This girl has hit the lottery with the contracts she has scored. Estee Lauder, Tiffany & Co., Jantzen to name a few.

So what type of modeling jobs are there for ladies who are looking to enter the business…. seems like a whole bunch. here is an article from the modeling blog.

Like any other business, yes modeling is a business, there are many different forms of modeling and many body types to fit the particular niche an advertiser wants. Most people are very familiar with the High Fashion models, but few realize how many other types there are. Going to a trade show? the girl in the booth may be a model. Buying a car? The auto showroom may have models making the cars look better. Going to the mall to buy cosmetics? There may be models at the cosmetic counters sitting in a chair for the makeup artist showing proper eyeliner application.

From high fashion elite to the girl next door catalog model to the baby model. The info below has been gathered from around the internet as a reference to help aspiring models find their own modeling niche to pursue.

Types of models and modeling:
Now you don`t have to be wafer thin to become a model. The modeling industry is open to everyone, all body types and sizes. If you want to be a model have a look at the list of different types of modeling and then decide the one you want to be. The world is filled with beautiful women, but not everyone can be a model, it takes a special person to do this. The most important ingredients are confidence and to believe in yourself.

High Fashion / Editorial models

The most glamorous jobs including campaigns, collections and magazine editorials are reserved for the top editorial/fashion models. This work is very eagerly sought after by fashion models because of the exposure it provides.

High Fashion models are generally 5?9? to 6? tall and are a very thin size 6-8 (120-122 lbs for a 5?9? model.) They have 32-35? busts, 22-25? waists and 33-36? hips. High fashion models have strong and distinctive features.

Commercial and print models

This refers to when models are photographed to promote a product on billboards, buses, magazines and newspapers. This type of modeling can be divided into two sections: Fashion Advertising and Product Advertising.

Catalog models

These models are hired to appear in catalogues like Next, Look again etc.. and sell everyday products to average people. Catalogue modeling often provides regular work and pay is usually generous. Requirements are flexible.

Runway models

This is one of the most effective ways to gain exposure. It is considered the most glamorous type of live modeling. It requires a lot of confidence and grace. The model must make the audience think that she loves the outfit she is wearing. She must look comfortable and make even the dullest outfit look attractive. There is a strict minimum height requirement of 5?9? for runway work. (Unless you`re Kate Moss).

Child /Teen/Junior models

Children and teens can find work in many different types of modeling including fashion shows, catalogue modeling and commercials. Teen models are generally called Junior models. Junior models must be 5?6? to 5?8? tall and 12 to 17 years old with very youthful looks. They usually have 32-34? busts, 21-25? waists and 32-34? hips.

Petite models

These models do just about everything, photography, fit modeling, trade shows, and swim wear. Models today come in different sizes and body types.

Specialty models

These are models with beautiful hands or nice long legs, a gorgeous neck, healthy hair, or small well-shaped feet, and equally important, a beautiful face. Their specialties are modeling jewelery, cosmetics, nail polish, hand lotion, shoes, hosiery, shampoo, etc.

Convention / trade show models

These models can be seen demonstrating automobiles, appliances, cosmetics, or new products at trade shows or conventions. Some of these models land commercial contracts. They just have a way with showing off a product. They have that winning smile. These models have beautiful teeth and a great personality.

Plus Size and Full Figure models

For the bigger woman. Designers are going out of their way to meet the demands of plus women.

Fit models

The garment is cut for their body type. You never see this type of model but these are the ones that our clothes are measured from. The fit model must maintain their weight and size to work in this segment of the industry. They can work in this industry for a long time, and the work is all year round.

Supermodels

Supermodels are highly paid, top fashion models. These (usually female) celebrities appear on top fashion magazine covers, in catalogues and in fashion shows. They often live in New York City, and during fashion weeks they usually have 4-5 shows/day.

The first model to pave the way for what would become the supermodel was Lisa Fonssagrives. The relationship between her image on over 200 Vogue covers and her name recognition led to the future importance of Vogue in shaping future supermodels. Fonssagrives at the height of her career could be both sophisticated and yet a kook, with which every American woman could identify. Her image appeared on cover of every fashion magazine during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s from Town & Country, Life and Vogue to the original Vanity Fair. Model Janice Dickinson, however, asserts that she was the person for which the term was coined. as she popped the term herself while talking to her agent at the climax of her career: “I’m not superman, I’m a supermodel”.

Other notable supermodels and top models have included Twiggy, Gia Carangi, Tyra Banks, Christie Brinkley, Niki Taylor, Rachel Hunter, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Elle Macpherson, Stephanie Seymour, Claudia Schiffer and Kate Moss. Currently, according several fashion world’s personalities as Claudia Schiffer, Gisele Bündchen is the only true supermodel of her generation,[2] although there are some others famous names as Alessandra Ambrosio, Carolyn Murphy, Laetitia Casta, Natalia Vodianova, Adriana Lima, Karolína Kurková, Daria Werbowy, Gemma Ward, Ana Beatriz Barros, Fernanda Tavares, Isabeli Fontana and Heidi Klum.[3][4] Notable male models include Tyson Beckford, Chad White, Marcus Schenkenberg and Evandro Soldati.

Glamour models

Glamour photography emphasizes the model rather than products, fashion or environment. Typically the sexuality of the model is emphasized in glamour photography, while in fashion photography the emphasis is on the clothes.

What’s the difference between a headshot and a zed or composite?
A headshot (the “standard” for actors, but sometimes used for models who have not compiled a composite or zed yet) is typically either an 8×10 or 8½ x 11 photo, usually in black & white, with the actor’s or model’s name printed on the bottom, agent or agency’s name (if represented), and sometimes with a current resumé attached. We don’t recommend having your resumé actually printed on the back, as you don’t want to throw them away every time you get a new credit to add to your resumé.

Headshots can either be printed from lithographs and reproduced on a printing press or they can be actual B&W glossy photographs printed in quality. The latter is significantly more expensive, such as $3-4 each in large quantities, whereas a printed headshot from a litho can be as little as 24¢ each.

A composite or a zed card can be an 8½ x 11 or (most commonly) 5½ x 8½, and can be either Black & White or color. They can be printed on a 4-color printing press (highest quality but most expensive) or a B&W printing press, or a laser or inkjet printer (very economical color). The most popular layout is a headshot on the front and 3 or 4 images on the back (assortment of poses, outfits, styles, etc.).

So you want to be a model? You know you have the look. You know you have the charm and you take a helluva good picture. How exactly do you go about getting yourself out there to get “discovered”?

Well, here is how you don’t do it…

You do not sit around the mall or Starbucks waiting for fame to fall into your lap.

A casting director will NOT come through, see you and say… “come with me, I will make you a star”. Actually, someone may come along and say just that, but they certainly will not have the same type of casting in mind as you do.

Don’t get me wrong, there have been ladies who were discovered walking through an airport or sitting in an ice cream shop, but your chances of that happening to YOU are slim. Now, if the planets are in perfect alignment, the moon is glowing a bright neon blue and you are having your best hair day EVER, then it may be worth while to hang out at your local Jerry’s Deli or better yet, buy a couple of lottery tickets (the odds are better).

I recently read a colorful biography about another great beauty discovered by a casting agent. The story I read failed to mention that the casting agent was a friend of the family and the meeting had nothing to do with chance. Out of the blue “discovery” stories make great Hollywood films and sound wonderful in biographies. Once you become a household name, maybe you can create one of your own as well.

While on the topic of things that may not pave your road to fame, here is another, shady and unknown modeling agencies. Shady modeling agencies do pave a road, many times in gold, to their own bank accounts. Use caution when approaching unknown agencies. Make sure that you stay focused and grounded in reality when dealing with them.

There are thousands of businesses that call themselves “modeling agencies”. Many are considered scams. An agency that may be considered a scam is one that accepts EVERY person it finds regardless of look or whether that person can ever be booked for a job. I have heard of casting agents (sales people) going as far as hanging out in local malls and High school lots.

If an agency promises you stardom, travel to exotic countries and thousands a booking… but only AFTER you pay them a high fee for their services, you should run for the exit. Reputable agencies make their money from getting you work, you should not have to pay them to get work.

Unfortunately, what happens many times with questionably agencies is that the models end up shelling out thousands to them for photos, shoots, prints, makeup, hair, stylists this that and the other, without any guarantee that the agency will ever attempt to book them for a job. These businesses should be called a photo or portrait studio since getting you to pay for pictures is their goal.

I have heard dozens of stories like that. Most models are lucky to get one job that pays 100 bucks from the agency after spending 3k for pictures. Another sad fact is that the expensive pictures the agency took may be worthless to market yourself with and usually look like some cheesy glamor shots.

When it comes to agencies just keep in mind that if they believe they can book you everywhere and make millions… then why do they need money from you? Reputable agencies make a fee from the client, not the model.

To protect yourself you must do some research and be very aware of the market your look fits into. This is where those scam agencies hook a naive model by telling them what they want to hear, not what they are right for. If you are 5’3″ and an agency tells you they will get you runway work in Paris, don’t believe them without proof.

As a model, you must know your target market and not be swayed by smooth sales talk. There is no such animal as a 5 foot tall High Fashion Runway model, no matter how gorgeous she is, well, not unless there is some obscure category of midget couture in the show in question. Be skeptical of things that don’t sound quite right and ask many questions. Remember that Kate Moss is considered a short model. Kate Moss is 5′ 7″ and an exception.

Make sure that the modeling you would like to do fits you physically. If it doesn’t, find something that does and target it.

Now, if you are 5′ 3″ it does not mean you can’t model, you just can’t model high fashion on a Paris Runway. Luckily, high fashion is just a drop in the bucket of all modeling work. There are catalog models, hair models, trade show and promo models, makeup models, character models, fit models, fitness models, shoe models, hand models, eye models and any other body part you can think of. There is also a good amount of work in TV and movies as extras. Those jobs are readily available and filled daily in every city in the US large and small, not just L.A and N.Y.

On any given day there are over 10 thousand modeling jobs that need models in the U.S. If you want any of those jobs, you will have to find them and apply… just like you would with any other kind of job.

You can find work on your own. Many casting calls can be found in newspapers, on job boards, listed on professional directories or client websites. It may be a large task to do daily as there are 100′s of websites you would need to check on a daily basis just to find the modeling jobs that fit you and are in your area.

Another option is a model casting service. A model casting service is a company that specializes in finding casting calls, auditions and requests, matches them to a client (a model) and sends the information to the model so they can apply. A model gives the service her information, her portfolio, and her job specifications. The service then searches every available casting call and resource daily, notifying her of castings that match her criteria.

A casting service is a mix between an agency and a do-it-yourself job search. Modeling.net, ExploreTalent.com and Auditions.com are examples of casting services. There are many others and all offer different levels of service and features. Some act as modeling communities with a focus on networking while others are more of a job board without any extra bells and whistles.

The advantage to using such a service is the time savings. Many busy models may not have the time to check the hundreds of places that offer modeling jobs daily, trying to stay on top of every opportunity may take many hours and you would have to search through countless of castings you have no interest in just to find the few you do.

A casting service does all the leg work for you. Their network and employees spend all day calling photographers, casting directors, and searching casting calls to find work for their members. As a bonus, casting directors browse the online model portfolios when casting for projects.

A casting service is a great option for models who either do not have an agency or do not want to sit around waiting for the agency to find a job for them. The casting service sends the model a list of jobs she requested and then the model submits her portfolio to the jobs she selects. It’s a good way for the model to get herself out there and get all the work she can. The casting service does not take a fee from any jobs the model books.

The way the casting service is paid is with an annual fee for service that is very reasonable. Many models wonder why there is a fee. Well, it is a business that has 100′s of employees making calls to casting agents trying to find work for its members. Those people need to be paid and since they do not act like an agency by taking a commission for the booking, they charge a small service fee, typically less than $1 per day.

Most casting services offer free trials. A model can use the free trial to see if the service offers anything she likes as well as get a chance to put up a portfolio, explore the job boards and interact with others before making a decision on whether the service is a good fit for her or not.
